An abstract of Prof. Arana's paper:
WHY
BELIEF IN GOD IS NOT PROPERLY BASIC
Ulysses T. Araña
According to
ancient, medieval, and modern classical foundationalism, some beliefs are
properly basic. These properly basic beliefs are taken to be the axioms of any
given belief system. Properly basic beliefs are also taken to be self-justifying
because they are not known on the basis of other beliefs. Those beliefs which
are not properly basic can only be justified on the basis of properly basic
beliefs. In other words, to classical foundationalists, what provides
justification is a belief that is properly basic.
In line with classical
foundationalism is Alvin Plantinga’s view that belief in god is properly basic.
But his view is different from the view of the classical foundationalists. The
classical foundationalists do not believe that belief in god is properly basic.
To them, belief in god can only be rational and justified on the basis of other
beliefs which are self-evident, evident to the senses, and incorrigible. Against
the view of the classical foundationalists and Plantinga, I will argue and
defend the view that no beliefs are properly basic. Moreover, belief in god may
not be a real belief but a non-cognitive mental state like a desire or a
feeling. Belief in god is, therefore, not properly basic.
